The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, in cooperation with the German Centre for Integrative

Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, is offering the following position, with a start date as soon as

possible and a contract duration until 31st December 2023, with the possibility of renewal:
Scientific Employee - Researcher for the European Topic Center on

Biodiversity and Ecosystems (ETC-BE) (M/F/d)

as part-time employment (80%)

The salary will be up to Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L if the personal requirements and tasks are fulfilled. This

position will be based at iDiv in Leipzig within the Biodiversity Conservation research group.

The project and research group:
The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National Research Centre

funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and

data-driven theory in integrative biodiversity research. It is located in the city of Leipzig and it is a central

institution of the Leipzig University, jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the

Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). More information

group investigates patterns and processes of global biodiversity change, with the goal of informing

This position is funded by the European Environment Agency (EEA) European Topic Centre on Biodiversity and

Ecosystems 2023-2026 Program (ETC-BE). ETC-BE aims to support the EEA with updated information on

biodiversity and ecosystems, mostly through co-creation, and thus support the EEA with the next generation of

thematic and integrated biodiversity and ecosystem assessments as well as identification of actionable nature
- based solutions. Thereby, the joint work of the EEA and ETC-BE will support the implementation of the Green

Deal. The job will be performed in collaboration with a large consortium of partner institutions and organizations

across Europe.

The position aims to provide scientific support to the European Environment Agency through the coordination

of activities in relation to biodiversity reporting, including but not limited to the task concerns the species,

habitats and protected areas dataflows and reporting mechanisms, Nature Restoration Law, Nature Directives

(Habitats and Birds) Invasive Alien Species Regulation, development of biodiversity indicators, conservation

status pledges, mapping of EU ecosystem types and EUNIS habitats, as well as other additional tasks as needed

and as appropriate. This position will be a part of a wider ETC-BE-iDiv technical and scientific team and the post

holder will be required to promote and maintain a transversal view of related tasks.

**Tasks**:

- Develop, and support reporting mechanisms under the Nature Directives and Nature Restoration Law
- Analyze conservation status pledges by Member States and assist in implementing Natura 2000, including

sufficiency assessments and Union list preparation
- Streamline statistics for protected areas across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine domains, presenting them

in EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 dashboards
- Conduct independent literature reviews to identify knowledge gaps and offer critical insights on key findings
- Lead the collection, synthesis, and analysis of research data, including surveys, interviews, and database

extraction
- Manage research data visualization, prepare scientific reports and presentations, and proactively contribute

to virtual workshops
- Respond to other ETC-BE tasks as required

**Requirements**:

- A scientific University degree (Diploma/ M.Sc.) in Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and coordinate across large and diverse international teams.
- Experience in preparing scientific articles for peer review
- A strong interest in European Nature conservation/ restoration policies
- Familiarity with GIS
