JobDescriptionThe Director Engineering, AudioSystems directs and coordinates activities of the Audio engineeringdepartments including:
- Responsibilityfor electroacoustic technology and audio electronics across theentire BU portfolio including speakers, microphones, headsets,amplifiers, signal processors and relatedequipment.
- Perform required R&D in supportof new product development and maintenanceactivities.
- Accelerate and manage new productdevelopment to enable faster and broader penetration of themarket.
Provide leadership and workdirection to the Engineering Managers and staff to ensure thatBosch establishes and maintains required technological leadershipin support of market requirements. Accountable for cost andschedule execution for projects within portfolio. Understand anddeploy Bosch development processes and standards across Engineeringdepartments. Assure effective interface with other Boschorganizations.
Identify opportunities to providesuperior solutions. Envision where technology is headed and createa plan to arrive there first. Manage the technology portfolio formultiple business lines. SpecificResponsibilities:Engineering andProduct Development
Supports all engineeringand product development related activities for assigned productareas. Thinks creatively alongside product management to identifytechnologies and solutions to serve customer needs. Interfaces withproduct management in the new product development process fromconception through market launch using Bosch PEP stage-gateprocess.
Confers with management, production, andlogistics staff to determine engineering feasibility, costeffectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.Directs department activities to design new products, modifyexisting designs, improve production techniques, and develop testprocedures. Integrates design team with supply chain andmanufacturing. Builds the technical capabilities, knowledge, andskills of this engineering function to be recognized and valued asa source of competitive advantage by customers and other functionswithin the organization.
Manage Budgetand Operating Costs
Forecasts operating costsof department and directs preparation of budget requests.Conceives, understands and defends the financial justification ofnew product development programs such as cost estimation, ROI,make-vs-buy, and capital equipment justification. Fosters outsiderelationships with technology providers and vendors. Works closelywith Business Line and Product Managers to determine R&Dpriorities and initiatives.
ManagementActivities
Supervises, coordinates and reviewsthe work of a staff of engineers and technicians. Estimatespersonnel needs, recruits and develops top talent. Helps define andassign work duties. Analyzes technology trends, and market demandto plan projects. Constantly seeks to build world class EngineeringCenters of Excellence. Maps critical skills necessary to achieveworld-classstatus.
ABachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering orPhysics, with a minimum of 10 years design experience, and 5 yearsmanagement experience or equivalent blend of education andexperience. Solid working knowledge of acoustics andelectroacoustic product design and professional audio systemsdevelopment including hardware, firmware and softwaredesign.
Specific knowledge of professional audiospeaker design and construction is preferred. Specific knowledge oftransducer design is preferred. Specific knowledge of professionalaudio product design including amplifiers and signal processors ispreferred. Proven track record of employing rapid productdevelopment techniques to optimize project implementation timelineswithin budget.
Knowledge and successful use oflean principles, manufacturing engineering, and engineering processcontrol methods and techniques. Ability to identify and assignresources toward specific product initiatives. Outstanding teamleadership skills. Exceptional ability to present and communicateto customers/prospects. Thorough knowledge of financial andmanagerial accounting principles as related to product developmentand engineering initiatives. Proven experience in personnelsupervision and budget preparation and management. Willing totravel between company locations and to and customer locations,includinginternational.
