Position: Optics Engineer - Electro-Optical Components

Location: Nuremberg (Hybrid)


About the Role:


Our client, a leading global telecommunications company, is expanding its Optical Subsystems group and is seeking motivated and experienced engineers to develop the next generation of coherent optical transmission systems. The Electro-Optical Components team, within this group, is responsible for architecting, specifying, designing, selecting, and testing the electro-optical components that drive these advanced transmission modules. The team's primary focus is to extend optical reach and transmission bandwidth while simultaneously reducing power consumption and floor space by leveraging the latest technologies.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Optical Component Design and Specification: Develop detailed specifications for the design and implementation of advanced optical components and modules capable of supporting data rates of 800 Gbit/s and beyond.
  • Component Characterization: Conduct thorough characterization of optical components and modules, applying findings to refine specifications, designs, and system performance.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Engage in technical discussions with suppliers to evaluate component technologies and performance, ensuring alignment with our client’s specifications and requirements.
  • System Integration Support: Collaborate with System Architects, System Engineering teams, and Hardware Board Designers to develop requirements for optical and electro-optical components, ensuring seamless integration into the overall system.
  • Qualification and Manufacturing Support: Participate in the qualification of optical components, supporting their introduction into manufacturing processes, and ensuring high standards of quality and performance.
  • Problem Solving: Diagnose and resolve complex issues related to optical components and systems, recommending corrective actions to ensure optimal performance.
  • Global Collaboration: Work closely with other Optics teams located around the world, contributing to the global development of cutting-edge optical technologies.


Required Skills and Experience:


  • Educational Background: A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a strong technical background in optical telecommunications, coherent DWDM systems, photonic device physics, or methods for characterizing optical devices.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of optical technologies, with a focus on the latest developments in coherent optical transmission systems. Experience in the characterization and specification of optical components is essential.
  • Analytical Skills: A strong analytical mindset with the ability to solve complex problems related to optical component performance and system integration.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent social competencies and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with colleagues from different teams and countries, as well as with external partner companies.
  • Independence and Flexibility: The ability to work independently and self-organized, with a high degree of flexibility to adapt to changing demands and cope with pressure.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in German and English, both written and spoken.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming for test equipment control and data analysis.
  • New Product Introduction: Understanding of processes related to New Product Introduction (NPI) and functional test procedures for coherent optical modules.
  • Simulation Tools: Familiarity with state-of-the-art simulation tools used for optical transmission.
