Für unser Institut für Aerodynamik und Strömungstechnik in Göttingen suchen wir eine/n Student of aerospace engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or similar (f/m/d), Hot-Wire Measurements and Data Evaluation on Rotor Tip Vortices in a High Pressure Wind Tunnel

Das erwartet Sie:

The helicopter department of the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology in Göttingen investigates the behavior of the wake of helicopter rotors. Of particular interest are the blade tip vortices, which originate from the rotor blade tips and form a helical vortex system downstream of the rotor. It is known that this vortex system is highly influenced by Reynolds number effects, though it is challenging to validate these influences experimentally. For this purpose, the first hot-wire experiments on a new rotor test stand, featuring a downscaled helicopter rotor in the High Pressure Wind Tunnel (HDG) of the DLR, are in preparation.

  • The following steps are planned for the student research project/master's thesis and can also be extended to include your own ideas by arrangement:

    • Literature research about hot-wire/hot-film measurements on rotor tip vortices, tip vortex properties and decay (focusing on Reynolds number effects, if possible).
    • Implementation of scripts for data evaluation, preferably in python, and code testing using sample data from existing helicopter rotor measurements.
    • Preparation and execution of hot-wire tip vortex measurements on a small-scale rotor in the High Pressure Wind Tunnel (HDG) of the DLR.
    • Evaluation of the data, and comparison to existing data and models.
    • Documentation and presentation of the results.

The work on the project can be started immediately and has to be done at the DLR Göttingen. For students from outside Göttingen/Germany, the DLR offers a gratification to cover the additional expenses.

  • Ongoing Master's degree in aerospace engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or a comparable degree programme
  • Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics
  • Enjoy working in a scientific environment
  • Good programming skills in Python or Matlab an advantage
