Be part of world-class projects deploying Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to enable ultra-secure networks for government, finance, industry, and cutting-edge research.Role Summary:Drive the design, development, testing, and deployment of next-generation QKD hardware platforms. Work on challenging and highly-collaborative projects focused on photonic, optoelectronic, and quantum devices contributing to real-world quantum communication networks across Europe. Key Responsibilities:Design, model, and optimize optical networks and photonic hardware for QKD infrastructure, including fibers, lasers, detectors, and optical terminals. Integrate components such as lasers, modulators, and single-photon detectors into full-stack quantum communication systems and conduct system-level performance validation. Develop and automate testbeds for laboratory and field measurements of quantum link performance, stability, and key generation rates. Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams (hardware, software, algorithmics, mechanical) to ensure reliable system integration and deployment. Support installation, troubleshooting, documentation, and optimization of QKD systems for metropolitan, long-distance, and space-based applications. Participate in projects at the intersection of hardware development and fundamental quantum optics research.Required Qualifications:PhD in photonics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.Demonstrated hands-on experience in quantum optics, photonics, optoelectronics, or experimental physics labs. Strong knowledge of optical simulation/modeling, opto-mechanical tolerancing, and practical system testing.Familiar with quantum communication protocols and QKD technologies, or motivated to specialize in quantum security hardware. Track record integrating photonic devices: lasers, fiber systems, detectors, into experimental or deployed systems.Collaborative, innovative, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, international research and development environment.Preferred Skills:Experience in automated measurement/testbed development for optical and quantum networks. Engagement with European quantum flagship projects or national research consortia.Familiarity with regulatory standards and security requirements for quantum communications is a plus.
