For our institute of Future Fuels in Cologne we are looking for a Master student Computational / Mechanical / Process Engineering, Mathematics or similar (m/f/d), Numerical simulation of a solar reactor for the production of renewable hydrogen

Das erwartet Sie:

The Institute of Future Fuels contributes to making renewable energy resources available to replace fossil resources. We develop solutions for how hydrogen and fuels can be produced cost-effectively on an industrial scale from the raw materials water, CO2 and nitrogen using renewable energies.

In order to phase out the use of fossil energy sources new processes and technologies for storing renewable energies are essential. The production of fuels such as hydrogen from climate-neutral processes plays an important role in that context. One promising approach is the two-step solar thermochemical cycle process for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Concentrated solar radiation is used to heat a metal oxide to high temperatures, releasing oxygen in the process. In a second process step, water vapor flows through the material and hydrogen is released. In order to use this “redox” cycle for the production of renewable hydrogen on a large scale, the DLR is developing existing and innovative reactor concepts to increase their overall efficiency.

For a new reactor type an experimental test rig is currently under construction. You will develop a numerical reactor model for better interpretation of the experimental data and future design optimizations. The main objective is the simulation of heat and mass transport during the cyclic reactor operation. Both convection and thermal radiation must be taken into account for heat transport during water splitting. Furthermore, a homogeneous flow of water vapor through the entire splitting material in the reactor is necessary in order to achieve an efficient operation. For a better understanding of the cyclic process and the important transport mechanisms and material properties, an initial literature research is necessary. With the help of experimental results of the test setup and the comparison with other reactor types from the literature, the model is to be validated and placed in the scientific context. Finally, a parameter study can be used to optimize the design and operation conditions of the reactor.

Das erwarten wir von Ihnen:
  • Current studies in computational / mechanical / process engineering or science, mathematics, physics or similar
  • Skills in the field of numerical (CFD) modeling are required, ideally with OpenFOAM
  • Knowledge of thermal and mass transport mechanisms, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
  • Experience with programming (python) and constructing CAD-models is beneficial
  • Good communication skills in an international work environment
  • Fluent English language skills for a productive exchange with colleagues
  • Independent, reflective and structured way of working
