Ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (d/f/m)

Candidates wishing to pursue a PhD in this area with a PIK supervisor as well as those already at postdoc level are encouraged to apply. The project is funded until Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E13. It is afull-timeposition with a weekly working time of40 hours per week. PhD positions are funded with a 75% share of the total E13 salary. Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.

The focus of this position is on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere via ocean alkalinity enhancement and coastal restoration. You will design climate change mitigation scenarios for Germany and the EU using the REMIND model, one of the world's leading integrated energy-economy-climate modelling systems, making it the first IAM scenario exercise to compare and assess marine CDR methods with terrestrial methods and mitigation options.

Key responsibilities:

Contributions to the development of the integrated assessment modeling framework REMIND for the analysis of marine CDR methods
Scenario design based on stakeholder interaction
Model-based analysis of various technology and policy solutions
Participation in project meetings
Presentation of results at international conferences
Publication of results in scientific journals

Requirements

Master's Degree or PhD in Physics, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, System Sciences or a related field
Training in formal, quantitative methods, excellent analytical skills
Experience in research software engineering, programming experience (e.g. R, GAMS)
Active interest in energy systems analysis and climate change mitigation
