Associate Director Accounting

The Associate Accounting Director will be responsible for overseeing the General Accounting and Financial Reporting functions from a US GAAP and local accounting perspective. He/she/d is responsible for implementing and maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure that company assets are adequately safeguarded and that all financial reporting is prepared in compliance with US GAAP, local GAAP and company policies.

As a direct report to the Director Accounting, he/she/d will participate in the transformation of the finance & accounting function, including driving organizational, process and technology enhancements. He/she/d will be expected to champion cost & productivity initiatives across the German business. He/she/d will also actively participate in business acquisitions, including financial due diligence, acquisition accounting and the implementation of integrated finance processes.

Essential Responsibilities

US GAAP Closing & Reporting:

  • Full ownership and accountability for financial accounting, both statutory and US GAAP, and reporting for all German entities. Provide insightful analysis of performance of statutory accounts.
  • Oversees the general accounting function, which includes inter-company accounting, cash management, account reconciliations, financial reporting, balance sheet management/reconciliation.
  • Responsible for monthly and quarterly closing & reporting activities for the German entities.
  • Provides technical accounting US GAAP guidance and support to the German business (revenue recognition, capitalization, accruals, etc.) and to junior team members of the wider accounting team.
  • Embed a culture of operational excellence, continuous improvement, effective controls, and efficiency in the reporting of quality financial information.

Tax Filings & Compliance:

  • Supervise and ensure successful completion of German tax reporting requirements (including CIT, VAT, payroll and other local taxes) and other reports required by government regulation.
  • Perform the annual return to provision (RTP) and provide the quarter tax cash forecast to the regional tax team.
  • Provide support to tax advisors in the documentation of the transfer pricing policy & operations.
  • Act as key point of contact for the German entities during local tax audits and ensure relevant documents are provided to local tax authorities timely.

Audits & SOX Compliance:

  • Oversee the organization and coordination of the year-end close process with external auditors.
  • Responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations, related to areas of responsibility, resulting from the audit findings.
  • Coordinates and oversees the Sarbanes Oxley activities relative to internal controls documentation, testing and segregation of duties.
  • Recommend and develop policies, procedures, and processes to enhance internal controls, the safeguarding of assets, the prevention of fraud, compliance with accepted accounting principles, sound business practices, and relevant regulations.

Team management & development:

  • Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities, noted above.
  • Responsible for continued development of these associates.

The ideal candidate should have at least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in a similar role (i.e. accounting), including previous management responsibility (graduate degree or equivalent preferred). He/she/d also should have comprehensive knowledge of German accounting as well as accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

  • Collaborates effectively across departments, including close coordination with Finance shared service centres Proficient in simplifying complex financial information for clear communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong analytical skills to clearly link financial results to operational performance drivers, generate alternatives and drive positive change.
  • Attention to detail, organization and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with large amounts of complex data.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and can make quality decisions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of local GAAP and US GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting, required.
  • Adaptable and flexible in response to new information, unexpected circumstances, and ambiguity..
  • High level of integrity and self-confidence.
  • Close collaboration with resources in Finance shared service centers.
  • Fluency in English and German.
  • Advanced computer skills on MS Office, accounting software (Mainly SAP R3, addtl: Hyperion, Peoplesoft Oracle, DATEV, ProAlpha) and databases.
