The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere.

For section 2.7 Space Physics and Space Weather (department 2: Geophysics), we are looking for a:
PostDoc (f_m_x) Machine Learning for Ionosphere

You will be working on the MIPT project: Ionospheric and plasmaspheric dynamics from observations, machine learning and physics-based modeling
Our section is working on understanding the dynamical evolution of the hazardous space radiation environment and developing tools for specification and prediction of the adverse effects of the space environment utilizing machine learning, as well as physics-based models, and data assimilation.
The MIPT project:
The overarching science objective of the research unit will be to better understand how the magnetosphere, ionosphere, plasmasphere, and thermosphere are coupled to each other.
The complexity of this system, which covers altitudes from tens to tens of thousands of km and over time scales from minutes to decades, requires an interdisciplinary team with experts in different domains, expertise in modeling and observations, as well as established collaborative ties to the international community.
Your responsibilities:
The successful candidate should have extensive experience in data analysis and machine learning. Job responsibilities will include a variety of tasks related to scientific programming, but are not limited to that.
Perform data processing and analysis
Develop and maintain machine learning models of the particle dynamics in the near-Earth space
Deploy the developed models for real-time operations
Maintain data and code repositories
Develop scientific visualizations of the results
Conduct scientific research in the field of space physics
Attend scientific meetings, including international conferences, and present the results
Write manuscripts that will be published in peer-reviewed journals
Collaborate within the MIPT Research Unit
Your qualifications:
PhD and Master's degree in Physics, Space Science, or a related field
Experience in processing and analyzing large data sets
Demonstrated expertise in utilizing machine learning techniques for data analysis and modeling
Advanced scientific programming skills, particularly in Python and MATLAB
Knowledge of Unix, Mac, and Windows operating systems
Experience in maintaining Unix workstations
Ability to work within a team
Attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent English skills
