The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 250 people, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for a Technical Assistant (m/f/d) limited to 4 years.

Background and position description

In the Jena Experiment, the influence of biodiversity on element cycling is investigated. For this long-term experiment we are looking for a technical assistant (m/f/d) from to organize and carry out sampling, to process samples in the laboratory, as well as for quality control and provision of the measurement data for further scientific analysis.

Your tasks

• Organizing and carrying out sampling (soil, water and gas) in the Jena area
• Sample preparation (filtering, grinding, weighing, freeze-drying)
• Simple chemical analyses (pH-value, conductivity)
• Routine laboratory work (sample preparation, delivery of samples to in-house analytical laboratories, data entry into spreadsheet programs, cleaning of glassware, etc.)
• Quality control of analytical results

Your profile

• Completed technical assistant (m/f/d) training in environmental and natural sciences, bachelor's degree in environmental and natural sciences, or demonstrated experience
• Experience with MS Office applications
• Unrestricted ability to work in the field
• Driver's license for cars
• Confident communication in English, both written and spoken

The position will be evaluated and graded following the collective agreement according to EG 9b TVöD Bund; in addition, we will provide a pension plan based on the public service (VBL).
