Bayreuth, Bayern, Deutschland Universität Bayreuth Vollzeit

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. At the chair of Spectroscopy of Soft Matter (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Köhler) the following temporary position is available immediately:

PhD position (m/f/d) in optoelectronic semiconductors with the possibility to obtain a doctorate degree
Topic: "Light controls light; development of optical logic gates"

The remuneration is based on pay group 13 TV-L (75 %). The position is limited to 3.5 years.

The project:

Typically, electronic devices based on integrated circuits run on electrons as signal carriers and correspond to an interconnected network of logic gates that generate a binary output "1" or "0" according to a combination of input stimuli. In this project, our aim is the development of devices for signal transduction that run on photons rather than on electrons for exploiting the parallelism that is inherently possible with optical signals. In order to do so we want to combine the expertise from various fields including photochromic molecules, semiconductor quantum dots and nanofabrication techniques.

The project is embedded in an interdisciplinary International German-Australian Research Training Group that is run by the University of Bayreuth (Germany), the University of Melbourne (Australia) and Monash University (Australia) combining experimental and theoretical physics, synthetic, physical and computational chemistry, electrical engineering, and material sciences.

Your profile:

Interested candidates (m/f/d) need to hold a MSc or equivalent at the intended time of starting the PhD.

We are looking for a highly talented, passionate graduate student (m/f/d) with interest or background in laser spectroscopy to perform optical experiments on nanostructured arrays as part of the program optical logic gates. We expect:
  • the ability to work self-motivated, team-oriented yet independent in an interdisciplinary and international research setting
  • the willingness to spend 6-12 months at the partner university in Melbourne or Monash
  • very good written and oral communication skills, with good command of English and a willingness to acquire a basic level of German
  • previous research experience in a topic related to OPTEXC, e.g. in form of a Master's research thesis
Our offer:

We offer an opportunity to be part of an interdisciplinary and international consortium with mutual research visits. We support you by providing a structured training program that includes scientific and personal development opportunities as well as a mentoring program. You will be able to work closely with leading experts in the field, participate at international conferences and take part in globally leading research.

The successful candidate (m/f/d) will work at the Spectroscopy of Soft Matter group of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Köhler at the University of Bayreuth, and will spend one year in Australia during his/her PhD, studying nanofabrication of the arrays with collaborator Prof. Paul Mulvaney at the University of Melbourne.

Further information is available:

Your application:

Please apply online via the Application portal of the University of Bayreuth by May 31, 2024 indicating the password "PhD optoelectronic semiconductors". Your application should contain a motivation letter, your CV, copy of your master's degree and final high school certificate or equivalent and names of two referees.

The documents will be deleted after the position has been filled in accordance with data protection requirements.
