Light is a versatile tool. Due to its many applications, as well as its unique properties as an electromagnetic wave and a light particle, it is a key technology for future challenges of the modern world. In this context, the Fraunhofer – Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, situated in the long-standing tradition of the optics hotspot Jena, is conducting research into the ongoing development of photonic technologies to solve a wide variety of problems and application scenarios.

Would you like to be part of our team to develop high-performance optics for laser-based inertial confinement fusion to generate green energy? We are looking for a scientist in the field of nanostructured optics for high-performance diffraction gratings for laser applications as well as for spectrometers and ground-based telescopes or satellites.

The »Center for Advanced Micro- and Nano-Optics CMN« working group deals with the design, production, and characterization of diffractive optical elements. The core technology used is electron beam lithography, in which structures are exposed with nanometer precision in a resist mask and transferred to a substrate through subsequent etching processes. In this way, among other things, high-performance diffraction gratings are developed, which are used, for example, in the laser industry for the compression of ultra-short laser pulses and for spectral beam combinations. Based on this technology, the Fraunhofer IOF is a leader in the development and production of highly innovative diffraction gratings and nanostructured optics for ground-based telescopes or satellites.

What you will do

  • Acquisition and management of projects with renowned national and international industrial partners
  • Design and conception of nanostructured optics according to customer requirements
  • Systematic further development of grating concepts and the closely related lithographic manufacturing technology with a focus on laser damage threshold and improvement of optical properties
  • Coordination and management of the group's scientific activities (3 scientists)
  • Publication or presentation of research results in refereed journals and at conferences
  • Supervision of student assistants and theses

What you bring to the table

  • Completed studies in physics (M.Sc.) with a focus on laser physics/optics/photonics with a doctorate
  • Profound knowledge in the field of optics and laser physics, especially about the use of diffractive optics, metastructures, nanostructured optics, or similar
  • Knowledge of compression of ultrashort laser pulses and construction of spectrometers for ground-based telescopes and space applications
  • Experience leading a small team of scientists and in project management
  • High communication and team skills, entrepreneurial thinking, and customer orientation
  • Independent, proactive and reliable way of working
  • Very good spoken and written English (B2), knowledge of German is an advantage

Also desirable are:

  • Experience in design and simulation processes of optical systems (e.g. Zemax) and diffractive elements (especially rigorous methods such as RCWA)
  • Experience in project management of ESA projects, e.g. by experience with ECSS standards

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to 2 years. We look for long-term cooperation. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
