Data Scientist for the Tipping Point Modelling Intercomparison Project (m/f/d)
(Position number: Data Scientist TIPMIP)
starting on or later.
The position is funded until June 2027. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E13. The position is a full-time position with a weekly working time of 40 hours per week. Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency. The position can be filled on a part-time basis with a minimum of 32 hours per week.
The Tipping Point Modelling Intercomparison Project (TIPMIP) is an international initiative that aims to systematically advance our understanding of tipping dynamics and associated critical thresholds which might commit parts of the Earth systemto large-scale, non-linear change.Earth system components which might show such non-linear behavior include the Greenland and Antarcticice sheets, the Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. In this context, a wealth of data from a wide range of observations andnumerical simulationsis expectedin the context of TIPMIP. This requires to set up, maintain and develop the data infrastructure and methodology to enable and sustain successful operation of the MIP, for which we are seeking to employ a dedicated TIPMIP data manager.
Key responsibilities:
Development and realization of strategies for quality assurance of climate simulations in collaboration with TIPMIP partners
Development of methods and tools for automated quality control of TIPMIP simulations
Coordinating data submission and distribution with partnering data centers, collaborators, and MIP participants
Technical support for project participants in the event of problems with data preparation, data access and the transmission of simulation data
Pre-processing of climate input datasets and provision of datasets for the modeling groups
Preparation and post-processing of simulation data for further analysis and publication in the data portals
Processing and visualization of data from the research results for publications
Long-term archiving of research data
Writing project documentation, reports (interim and final project reports, conference reports) and applications for data management systems and data storage capacities
Support of e.g. interns, students, doctoral candidates, and project scientists in the processing, evaluation and interpretation of data and in the conception and implementation of research projects
Requirements
Completed scientific higher education degree (Master's degree/university diploma) in the field(s) of meteorology, computer science, geosciences, physics or a comparable field
Experience with managing large modeling datasets
Experience in scientific software engineering
Knowledge of current developments in various fields of research, e.g. data information systems
Programming skills in the languages: C, BASH, Python, LaTeX
Software user knowledge: MS Office, Linux
Proficient in dealing with database systems and operating systems
