Professorship of "Intercultural Theology" (f/m/d)

Open rank: Tenure Track Professorship (W1 to W3) or Full Professor (W3)

to be filled in the summer semester 2026.

The position is open to both established scholars and excellent early career researchers in the post-doc phase. In case of a successful application from the first group, the appointment would be at the W3 level; otherwise, it would be at the W1 level with a tenure track option. Tenure track professorships at Heidelberg University are initially limited to six years and, upon positive tenure evaluation, transition into a permanent W3 professorship. We look for someone who can offer courses in the entire field of religious studies and intercultural theology, including theories and methods of religious studies and interreligious exchange, contemporary religions and global Christianity. A research focus in the area of intercultural theology is expected. A practical familiarity with theories and methods of religious studies is required.

In addition, we are looking for a colleague who can help the Faculty with the following goals:
  • Collaboration in further developing the Master's program in Interreligious Studies
  • Conception and implementation of a structured English-language teaching program
  • Contribution to the university-wide teaching program in Gender and Diversity Studies, including theories of intersectionality and postcolonialism
  • Collaboration with disciplines outside theology, particularly religious studies, sociology of religion, and area studies related to the applicants own research interests
In accordance with Article 51 and 51b Higher Education Act of the state Baden-Württemberg, the appointment to a tenure track professorship (W1) requires a completed degree, an excellent doctorate, and pedagogical aptitude which has generally been proven through teaching experience. Further publications in a second research area are also expected. If you spent time employed as a research assistant (before or after your doctorate), this employment and the period of your doctoral studies combined should not exceed six years. The appointment to a full professorship (W3) additionally requires a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualifications (Article 47 (2), Higher Education Act).

Besides mentioning a maximum of five publications that are considered representative applications will consist of a CV, including a list of publications, a list of courses taught, copies of certificates, a statement of research interests and objectives and if applicable a list of third-party funds raised and teaching evaluations – collated in one PDF file.
