Professorship (W 2) for Hebrew Bible and its Exegesis

The successful candidate will represent the entire field of the Hebrew Bible and its exegesis in both teaching and research. They will place the Bible in the context of its historical, social, religious, and cultural origins, critically engaging with the text while also addressing traditional Jewish reception and interpretation.
The professor's responsibilities include teaching in the various degree programs in Jewish theology (among them an English-language MA) in close collaboration with the language lecturers for Hebrew and Aramaic, as well as the supervision of doctoral dissertations and Habilitation theses (post-doctoral dissertation). Responsibilities also include active participation in the University's self-governing administrative bodies. The professor will cooperate with the departments of Jewish and Religious Studies, Life Orientation-Ethics-Religion (L-E-R), the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg, the Center for Interreligious Theology and Religious Studies (CITRS) and in particular the university-affiliated rabbinical schools (Conservative and Liberal / Reform).
Prerequisites for the appointment are demonstrable teaching qualifications, a published PhD dissertation in the field of Hebrew Bible, and a Habilitation book (or equivalent record of research, which may consist of several substantial publications on topics other than that of the dissertation). Experience acquiring third-party project funding and organizing academic conferences is desirable. Applicants shall be members of a Jewish congregation. Non-native speakers are expected to acquire sufficient skills to function in the German academic environment, including required administrative tasks, over a transition period of two years.
