For the generation of digital twins and virtual replicas, the modeling of physical laws is crucial.
The behavior of physical entities, such as buildings or gas pipes, and their reaction to environmental influences can be often described by partial differential equations.
Finite element methods (FEM) are widely used to simulate these laws, for which a variety of open source and commercial software solutions exist.
However, these are often not sufficient for real-world comprehensive 3D simulations of time-critical applications as needed to simulate the behavior of critical infrastructures.
Therefore, the subject of this thesis is to extend a software framework for high-performance 3D FEM simulations and to estimate state-of-the-art runtime capacities.
This includesIdentification of possible methods to improve the performance of FEM simulations (adaptive time stepping, preconditioning, parallelization)
Evaluating the possible application of model order reduction methods to further decrease computational cost
Implementation of chosen methods in a Python software framework
Estimation of the current runtime behavior for a critical infrastructure example application
Das erwarten wir von Ihnen:
Currently enrolled as a Master student in engineering, mathematics, computer science or similar major
Basic programming skills (Python, C++, Java ...)
Experience in FEM methods is beneficial, but not required
Experience in 3D modeling is beneficial, but not required
Knowledge of the German language is preferable, but not required
