We are offering a DFG-funded position in the Biodiversity, Macroecology and Biogeography working group (uni-) to study how orchid-mycorrhizal fungi interactions drive orchid spatial patterns across islands for a period of one year.

The salary is defined according to the German public service salary E13 TV-L scale (100 %). The position should be filled as soon as possible.

The Biodiversity, Macroecology and Biogeography groups research aims at understanding biodiversity patterns at different spatial scales and at understanding how natural drivers and human activities affect them.

Project description:

Species interactions are among the most important forces structuring ecological communities and are fundamental to the maintenance of species diversity.

We seek to address how the highly specialised symbiosis between orchids and mycorrhizal fungi (OMF) influences orchid spatial patterns across islands.

We have sequenced DNA of 400 orchid individuals across the Canary Island archipelago to identify the composition and abundance of OMF.

In addition, we have sampled soil environmental characteristics (pH, nitrogen etc.) at sites with and without orchids, including OMF communities free-living in the soil.

In short, all data is collected and is ready to be analysed and written up.

Your tasks:

  • Leading publications, including collaborating with international colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should hold a PhD degree in ecology or a closely related field.
  • Advanced knowledge in running bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Advanced knowledge in data processing and analysis in the statistical software R.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Experience in writing and leading manuscripts.
  • Willingness to work and collaborate in an international, interdisciplinary research team.
  • Strong interest in island biology, biogeography, and species interactions.
