About the team

Borg, a small team with fewer than 10 members, ensures direct collaboration with the CEO and CTO on a daily basis. While everyone must attend daily calls, you have the flexibility to manage your own schedule.

About the role

As a Backend Engineer at Borg, you will collaborate with data scientists and product managers to develop a system of reusable services with a cohesive architecture, providing users with comprehensive information and control. Your responsibilities will involve designing and implementing efficient systems for crawling and processing large volumes of data from the web daily to meet the platform's evolving challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Envision and develop crawlers/API-clients to aggregate complex data into understandable social network descriptions
  • Design efficient and reusable backend systems for complex web applications
  • Collaborate with Product Designers and Software Engineers to deliver compelling products
  • Address performance and scalability issues, plan data modeling, and feature releases
  • Provide mentorship to junior Backend Engineers

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in developing complex and high-throughput backend systems
  • 2+ years of experience with serverless applications like AWS Lambdas
  • Expertise in web scraping at a terabyte scale
  • Proficiency in Python, including asynchronous programming, meta-programming, and scientific Python
  • Deep understanding of web frameworks such as Flask, Django, and FastAPI
  • Experience in building scalable APIs and optimizing complex SQL queries using PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of E2E testing with tools like Cypress
  • Ability to leverage cloud-native technologies for a high availability platform
  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills and a focus on long-term engineering goals
  • Enjoy writing documentation and understanding its importance

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Interest in sociology, anthropology, game theory, or related disciplines
  • Interest in design, user experience, or related areas
  • Familiarity with diverse online cultures and communities
  • Proficiency in JavaScript-based backend technologies like ExpressJS

Work Setup

Borg operates as a fully remote team with team members worldwide, mainly centered in Austin, TX, and Berlin, Germany. Daily standup calls are part of the routine, while most work is done asynchronously. The team leverages various remote work tools and continually explores new tools to optimize efficiency. If you choose to work from Berlin, our office in Mitte is available.

Application Process

Borg focuses on evaluating abilities over credentials in its hiring process. The recruitment process assesses problem-solving skills relevant to the role, without any irrelevant tests or puzzles. The detailed descriptions and questions for each role serve as an effective filter, so it's essential to complete all questions diligently. The interview process typically consists of three rounds, and for some positions, a short take-home task may be assigned. Following successful interviews, you might engage in a week-long trial project, for which you will be compensated. This trial period allows both parties to evaluate compatibility, leading to a formal offer or a respectful decline within a concise timespan.

The entire process, from initial contact to decision-making, spans 2-3 weeks to ensure efficiency and transparency.
