The Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel conducts research in the fields of energy management and energy systems technology. Around 450 scientists, employees and students develop solutions for the energy transition and generate around 38 million euros in revenue per year.
The Department of Energy Economics and Systems Analysis evaluates future energy supply structures in four subject areas and develops concepts for energy system design. We use detailed modelling and simulation models for cross-sector expansion scenarios. We analyse the interaction between generation and load, considering new technologies and market design. Our investigations lead to well-founded recommendations for the development of business models at a business and economic level.
There is a need to investigate and process a comprehensive empirical measurement database for sector-coupled heat supply systems to validate existing simulation models of individual buildings. The combination of measurement, simulation and temperature data can then be used to develop forecasting systems, among other things. In addition, the use of individual building simulation models also enables the determination of time-resolved aggregated flexibility potentials.
What you will do
The main objective of the master's thesis is to simulate the operation of different types of existing heat pumps using physical models, taking into account real measurement data and typical design points.
The task includes:
- Programming appropriate scripts for data analysis and processing
- Support in the extension of existing simulation models and the addition of operating rules depending on the type of building and heat pump
- Analysis of design methods for heating systems with different heat pump and heating rod configurations at the bivalence point
- Preparation of documentation, presentation of the results and writing of the master's thesis

- Enrolled student in the fields of engineering, energy management, physics, computer science, applied mathematics or comparable courses of study
- Analytical thinking and independent, creative, and goal-oriented work
- Programming skills, preferably in Python
- Confident handling of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point)
