Finance & Ops Junior Specialist: ENG/GER speaking, part-time (m/f/d) //

We are looking for a part-time English- and German-speaking Finance & Operations Junior Specialist (m/f/d) to play a pivotal role in our team's financial management and operational efficiency. This dynamic role involves overseeing financial transactions, ensuring compliance with legal regulations, and optimising our operational processes.

Your primary responsibilities will revolve around managing expenses, payroll, and navigating the legal landscape in Germany. If you have an accounting background and are interested in financial planning, budgeting, and controlling, we'd like to meet you.

Ultimately, you'll help maintain Mastodon's financial health and ensure we use our resources beneficially to grow our main product, the free and open-source software.

What you'll be doing:

Finance-focused
  • Maintain monthly accounting tasks, including processing payments, payroll management, and reconciling bank statements
  • Generate weekly finance reports detailing cash balances and accounts receivable
  • Conduct cost analyses, prepare monthly budget vs actual reports, and calculate pro-forma financials
  • Develop financial and non-financial annual reports for the fiscal year 2023
  • Provide administrative support during budget preparation
Ops-focused
  • Cultivate a strong and efficient relationship with our accountants*
  • Process our donations and follow up with donors and partners where needed
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of payments to suppliers and tax authorities
  • Maintain organised records of employee contractual data and related documentation
  • Document recurring operational tasks and create guidelines to streamline processes
  • Support our CFO with various ad-hoc legal and finance projects, e.g. grant applications
*Please note that even though this role is remote-first, it may require occasional in-person meetings in Berlin

To succeed in this role, we think you should have:
  • Working proficiency in English and German languages
  • Solid grasp of accounting and bookkeeping fundamentals
  • Good understanding of German legal frameworks and systems
  • Advanced MS Excel skills, including spreadsheet creation and financial functions
  • Familiarity with accounting software such as DATEV or similar
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities
  • Comfort with handling data, analytical and diligent mindset
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ability to identify numerical errors
  • Problem-solving skills and the capacity to make autonomous, informed choices
  • At least a 4-hour crossover with our team (between 8:00-16:00 CET timezone)
We would also love to see:
  • Interest and passion for open-source or fediverse
  • BSc degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or similar
  • Prior work experience as a financial analyst, accountant, controller or a similar role
Budget:
  • The compensation for 20 hours per week workload is between €800 and €2,000 gross, and will mostly depend on the candidate's experience and expertise.
  • This role could also work well as a part-time or year-long (2 semesters or longer) internship.
