What to expectThe Department is aiming at the understanding and prediction of dynamical processes in the atmospheric boundary layer and in the upper atmosphere. In the deep-convection group, we focus on the physics and short-term forecasting of atmospheric deep convection, i. e. thunderstorms, particularly in the context of aviation. To this end, we develop novel modelling approaches combining physics and machine learning. This Master thesis examines seamless predictions that combine different forecasting approaches, in particular the time scales over which either methods are advantageous. The project integrates in the Italia—Deutschland Science-4-Service network and involves exchange with the Italian and German Met Services. Your tasksliterature study on the topic of thunderstorm short-term prediction, including the different modelling approaches and evaluation procedures.familiarisation with the existing short-term prediction tools at PA-MET, in particular Cb-TraML and SALAMA, on the HPDA cluster Terrabyte. This initiation will be in close interaction with the rest of the team and helps preparing relevant case studies for a publication. adjustment of the existing models for the particular research question.
