System Administrator SAN / Storage (f/m/d)

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national center for research into the geosphere. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of Germany's largest scientific organization. With around 1,500 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change and its regional impacts, to understand natural hazards and mitigate associated risks, to secure the growing demand for energy and raw materials for a high-tech society in a sustainable manner and to assess the impact of humans on the Earth system.

The following position is to be filled in Section 5.3 IT Services and IT Operations (Department "Geoinformation"):

System Administrator:in SAN/Storage (f_m_d) Reference number 9128 Your area of responsibility:
  • Together with your team, you will be responsible for the configuration, administration, monitoring and management of the SAN infrastructure and all storage systems.
  • You will support the administration and further development of the central backup and archive system as well as the hierarchical storage management.
  • You support the development of our object storage (S3) into a platform for scientific data, e.g. for seismic data from fiber optic measurements.
  • In the storage team, you will contribute to the further development of our storage services by recording and transparently presenting the quality of service achieved, identifying and eliminating capacity and performance bottlenecks and identifying and implementing new technologies in good time.
  • You are actively involved in 2nd/3rd level support.
  • You coordinate both internal and external collaboration with partners and system suppliers and continuously add to the storage system documentation.
  • You advise our scientific users on all storage-related issues, are actively involved in exciting projects and contribute to the planning and further development of the storage infrastructure.
Your qualification profile:
  • You have successfully completed your studies in computer science or another STEM subject (at least a Bachelor's degree).
  • You have experience in the stable operation of SAN infrastructures, modern storage technology, object storage, distributed file systems and cluster technologies.
  • You have practical knowledge of SAN and experience with one or more of the following products/systems or are willing to develop your skills with us: TSM/ISP, Ceph, NetApp FAS/AFF/E-Series, Dell/EMC, IBM
  • A basic understanding of modern infrastructure concepts will help you in your work (SDN, SDS, Objectstorage/S3, containers, virtualization etc.)
  • You feel confident in dealing with various hardware and also show a strong hands-on mentality in the data center

Remuneration:

If the collective agreement, professional and personal requirements are met, the classification will be in accordance with TVöD Bund (tariff area East) up to pay group 14. In addition, an advance grant of steps above the collective agreement and a monthly temporary specialist allowance may be considered.

Working hours:

Full-time (currently 39 h/week); the position is generally suitable for part-time work.
