The Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) is one of the world's leading art universities with a long tradition. It is an important partner in Berlin’s network of culture, art and science and artistic activities in Berlin. More than 200 professors, around 250 employees in art and sciences, and around 300 employees in administration, libraries, service and technology work at the UdK Berlin. More than 4,000 students (30 % of them international) are enrolled in over 70 degree programmes at the four colleges of Fine Arts/Architecture, Media and Design/Music, and Performing Arts, as well as at the Central Institute for Continued Education (ZIW), the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) and the Jazz Institute Berlin (JIB). The UdK Berlin offers teacher education programmes in the subjects of Fine Arts, Music and Theatre/Performing Arts. The UdK Berlin is one of the few art colleges in Germany with the right to confer doctorates and post-doctoral qualifications.

Through the diverse activities of its members, the institution contributes to a culture of exchange with Berlin’s civil society and the global audience that is both artistically and academically guided. Its institutional understanding of a relevant practice within the arts and sciences draws upon a dialogue with the social, political, technological and artistic challenges of the 21st century.

The UdK Berlin, College of Fine Arts – Institute for Art Didactics and Aesthetic Education – is seeking to appoint a UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR (m/f/d) – Salary group W 3 –
Permanent full-time professorship
Field of teaching: Education Methods for Teaching Art at Integrated Secondary and Grammar School Level
Teaching obligation: 9 course hours (LVS) Start of service of the professorship: 1 April 2025 Reference number: 1/193/24 With places for 1031 students, 36 professorships and one junior professorship, the Faculty of Fine Arts offers a diverse range of education in all artistic and academic fields of fine arts teaching, including teacher training for primary and integrated secondary level/grammar schools. They include painting, sculpture, fine arts, drawing, photography, media, performance, art history and aesthetics, aesthetic teaching practice/methodology of teaching fine arts, and also further education in the field of art and cultural work at the Institute for Art in Context. Duties the open position offers:
  • Teaching and research in education methods for teaching art at integrated secondary and grammar school level. The focus of research should be on relevant questions related to contemporary art education, e.g., taking into account disparities within the context of immigrant society, inclusion and (post-)digitality. 
  • Supervision and support of students on the bachelor and master degree courses for art teachers for integrated secondary and grammar schools and the master’s degree in fine arts for teachers for integrated secondary and grammar schools – lateral entry. Here, students are expected to be able to make productive use of their individual range of artistic experiences in developing their personal understanding of the profession of art teacher*. 
  • work on university committees, also the inter-university committees for teacher training in Berlin 
Requirements:
  • a personality with a convincing methodological approach to the research and teaching of art, capable of representing the full breadth of the subject
  • a strong connection to fine arts in research and teaching 
  • a master's degree in art/art education, preferably for grammar and/or secondary schools 
  • a doctorate in art education – pedagogy/didactics 
  • a post-doctoral qualification or equivalent achievements
  • proof of completion of preparatory service/traineeship for a teaching profession is desirable 
  • experience in teacher training
  • evidence of teaching experience at university level
  • appointment requirements in accordance with § 100 of Berlin Act on Higher Education (BerlHG)
