Two Positions Research Software Consultant (m/f/d)

We are inviting applications for team members to join the iBOTS Code (iBehave Open Technology Support) team, our new data engineering, consulting and teaching platform in the field of neuroscience and neurotechnology.

The position is available starting from June 2023, for initially three years due to the project, with the possibility of extension. The position will be affiliated with the Institute of Physiology II, University of Bonn Medical School, Germany.

The position is embedded in two large networks for neuroscience and neurotechnology
  • iBehave, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, brings together more than 30 groups in the areas of circuit, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, and neuroethology with the common goal to unravel mechanisms of behavior. iBehave partners include six partner institutions: the University of Bonn, the University of Cologne, the University of Aachen, the Max-Planck-Institute of Neurobiology of Behavior Caesar, the German Center of Neurodegenerative Diseases DZNE, and the Research Center Juelich
  • NeurotechEU, funded by the European Commission, is an alliance by the European University of Brain and Technology of 8 top universities in Europe with the joint goal of building a network of education and research in the area of Neurotechnology
As a teacher and consultant in our iBOTS team, you will have the opportunity to
  • Consult with neuroscience researchers on their computational projects and provide training, tutorials, and troubleshooting support for their individual needs
  • Develop training materials and teach online programming and data management workshops
  • Develop research software for neuroscience and neurotechnology projects and researchers using a wide variety of programming languages and tools, including Python, Git, R, and Matlab
  • Disseminate knowledge and assist with knowledge management among partners
  • Work with computational scientists and neuroscientists to develop teaching and course management platforms, including Campus+, an INCF.org-based education and training platform
  • Travel regularly to our European and national partners and collaborators
  • Mentor and collaborate with other team members to achieve common goals
  • Collaborate with the international office of the University of Bonn to foster international collaboration
• Scientific Software Development Experience
  • - At least 4 years of experience with Python, SQL, or R
  • - At least 6 months experience in Git, demonstrated by a portfolio of open-source projects on a Git platform (e.g. GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, etc)
  • - At least 1 year of training in at least two of the following areas: data engineering, signal processing, scientific image processing, statistics, optics and microscopy, machine learning, or electronics
  • • Teaching Experience
  • - Past working experience in teaching small groups or classrooms, and/or developing teaching materials
  • - A strong interest in working as a programming teacher
  • • Life Science or Cognitive/Behavioral Science Experience
  • - Experience with cognitive or behavioral sciences or a master s degree or higher in neuroscience or a related field
  • - Strong communication and mentoring skills, with an interest in training others and making complex ideas simple
  • • Team Mindset
  • - A strong interest in working in a highly-collaborative team environment
  • - A habit using software craftsmanship methodologies in an academic setting
  • • Strong English and German language skills
